Keeping the City Sane and Sound.
Social Cohesion and the Service Sector
The Service Sector as of this century has been approached as just another Industrial exponent. It has to make money and the serve the Omnipresent Economic purpose or it has no right to exist. This has led to an overall decline of its social purpose to societies on local levels everywhere except for the still developing countries & Nations. The modern western World however is undergoing a transformation on all social levels that will touch many generations still to come.
What I am referring to is the following; The service sector and especially bars & coffee-shops and such are historically linked to social cohesion & social control on local levels. They are the places where people come together and meet in order to talk and ventilate their grievances or daily frustrations. They offer a way out for the average person, from the shortcomings of their developing lives and communities. They also function as thermostats that would make people with mental liabilities stand-out or be noticed at least.
They also were supposed to function as learning or educational meeting-points between young and older folks on matters of practical life experiences. So not only were these places used as places to let of steam as is now constantly done on big consumer venues, they had definite practical purpose towards local communities.
The Industrialization of this sector has done away with this social function as if it never existed. It has replaced it with fake smiles, grumpy waiters and disconnected customers. It has replaced it with big consumers venues with hardly any human connections or communications going on. Big venues with shallow connections drowned in a sea of drug & alcohol use, just to cover up the shallowness of the entire experience. Nothing wrong with doing some occasional drugs! When it becomes a weekly affair it is harmful to it’s user and the society as a whole.
In the meantime we have also seen the influx of the gadgets like smart-phones. These extensions of the ,’new-human’, have also contributed to less ongoing communications between people in general. As is clearly visible in the bars & coffee-shops where most are now engaged with their touch-screens and no longer with the people around them. And although this activity is just a way to hide their insecurity towards one another, it doesn’t help creating better people in better communities.
So now we see an increase in people in cities living in complete solitude. And an increase in mental health cases in these same cities. It is all because a lack of social cohesion. This constant economic approach towards all things around us, will no doubt bring our individual societies to their knees and create growing misunderstanding and extremism between all folks in general. The constant ongoing economic warfare between Nations will bring our kind to the brink of self-destruction and leave us with nothing but a self-for-filling prophecy of a destructive Mad-Max reality. It is shameful and lacks all intelligence.
Our Political leaders do not understand these issues even in the slightest and are just overrated bookkeepers. They are the problem! They should have occupied themselves merely with logistics and infra-structure, not issues of human and social interaction. They have failed completely in the creation of well-functioning societies and became part of the problem themselves. Stuck in arrogance and raising taxes for their own little prestige pet projects, they have failed the people and mankind in general. Instead they are now creating more social tensions between the people and state and therefore we see a rise of state-violence in all major leading countries in the World. Politicians are now playing a dirty roll between Police and Citizens driving us away from a more social future for all. They do not get it! They do no longer see themselves as a layer of society, but as the level above it all. They see themselves as Regents not Civil-Servants. They are selling-out our societies to economic Transnational-corporations & interests.
And therein lies the problem. While the average Joe is caught up in a maze of taxes and laws, the quality of life has become a shallow promise in an ocean of disconnect. When a person has no passport or insurance he or she has no rights, not even basic human rights, like water, food or shelter. This can only lead towards Corporate or Technocratic Fascism. And this in turn can only lead to constant upheaval, revolution and chaos.
We can not create or sustain cities with mere clean water, energy, roads and housing. It just ain’t that simple. We will need to find ways to keep our Cities Sane and Sound.
The Service Sector should play a connecting part in this urban evolution. It should create the ability for people to come together and find one another in good and bad times. With or without money. Big Cities will contribute nothing to the future of humanity if they do not find ways to function on social levels. They will become nothing more than some play-toys for wealthy & frustrated introvert petty-full sorry excuses for human beings. They will not generate new innovative thinking, nor will they be considered havens of peace. In short; stop harassing the small service sector entrepreneurs with ill-considered laws and give space to this sector that is much more important to us Humans than we ever realized!
